He was one of the founding members of Eton's first mountaineering club. Grylls studied at Eaton House, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. His parents are Sir Michael Grylls, a Conservative politician, and Sarah Grylls her sister, Lara Fawcett, gave her son the nickname "Bear" when he was a week old. He is an Anglican, and his Christian faith has been described as the "backbone" of his life. He learned to skydive as a teenager and earned a second black belt in Shotokan karate around the same time. The adventurer learned to climb and sail with his father, who was a member of the prestigious Royal Yacht Squadron when he was a young boy. Additionally, he is also an author having written many books and is also a motivational speaker. In the series, he shared survival tactics, and it is estimated that he earned $30,000 per episode. He is most famous for his television program Man vs Wild, which ended after seven seasons.
